PAINTING CONCRETE FLOORS
Basement Floors
I was in the middle of transforming a little hall in the basement, really trying to give this little hall a lot of texture and character. Check out the page for texturizing walls. After completing the walls I felt the carpet looked really drab so I decided to just rip it up and see what happens.
Strip the Carpet: Comes up pretty easy- use flat head screw driver to pull one corner up, then just pull the rest up.
|
Remove Tack Strips: Use a butter knife, flathead screwdriver, and broom and dust pan. Use butter knife to get edges of strips up and pry the strips up. Use hammer to get all the nails out. Sweep up the mess as you go.
|
Paint Grout: After tack strips are up sand the floor to get any of the carpet glue up. Sweep one last time and then you are ready for the first layer of paint. Choose your grout color and paint.
|
After the paint dries (at least 4 hours) tape your pattern. I use .7" tape for a thinner grout line.
|
Pick your tile color and use sponge to sponge on the color. As each tile is finished pull the tape off. For a less boxy look use a small paint brush to brush the grout edges, giving the tile a more 3D look.
|
After all tile are done look for any spots where the tape might have pulled up the paint. Use your finger to dab on a little grout paint to touch up flaws. Then let it dry.

Chicly Cheap Painted Basement Floor
Playroom Floor- Have Some Fun!
The hall turned out so well I decided to continue with the painted cement theme. The room at the end of the hall is the playroom. The playroom has. once again, light tan carpet that is VERY stained. So I decided it had to go. Why put carpet back down just to have it ruined from all the girls crafts and games. I figured I could have fun with the floor, too, really add character to it.
Prep Floor...Apply Grout Color
Prep the floor like described above. Once all tack strips and glue are removed from floor paint the grout color. I went with a blue to add a little charm and color to the kids playroom.
Sponge on the Main Color
After the "grout" color dried I taped off the shape I want for the floor. Then I sponged on the main color I wanted. Remember to brush the edges the give it a more 3D feel and helps it to look less boxy.
Add Character
Since this is the kids playroom I decided to add some character. I painted a welcome matt at the door! :) Also. I hand painted on a little something extra on each block!
